Breast Cancer Now – new merged breast cancer charity

15 June 2015 by Sam Burne James

Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer announced in November that they would merge, and in March Baroness Delyth Morgan of Drefelin was named as the new organisation’s chief executive.

The charity formed by the merger of Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer will be called Breast Cancer Now and use a new logo.

The new name for the charity, which was formed in April, will be announced to the wider public through the launch of its first television advertising campaign under the new brand tonight.

A statement from Breast Cancer Now said: “The charity’s name conveys the urgency required to stop women in the UK dying from breast cancer, with its mark representing the endeavour, dedication and hearts of the supporters and researchers behind the charity’s life-saving work.” It said that BCN “has the ambition of stopping women dying from breast cancer by 2050”.

A new multi-channel advertising campaign for the charity, the Last One, which features women with breast cancer speaking about the realities of the disease, will have its television premiere during Channel 4 News this evening.

The two charities, which together have 212 staff and a combined income of £28.3m according to their most recent annual accounts, announced in November that they would merge.

In March, Baroness Delyth Morgan of Drefelin, a crossbench peer who had previously worked for both charities, was named as the chief executive of the new charity.

In a statement today, Fiona Hazell, director of communications and engagement at BCN, said the announcement of the name would start a new era for the charity.

“We have the brightest scientific minds across the UK already working hard behind the scenes to discover how to prevent breast cancer, how to detect it earlier and how to stop it taking lives,” she said. “We want everybody who’s been touched by breast cancer to join us, to stop lives being lost to this terrible disease for good.”

Samia al Qadhi, chief executive of Breast Cancer Care, a separate charity, said: “It is exciting news that Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Breast Cancer Campaign have now merged and launched as one charity. As Breast Cancer Now they will help advance medical research. We look forward to working with our sister charity as they make breakthroughs, while we continue to support people as they face breast cancer.”
