We invited Sarah along to talk to us about diet and nutrition as we can always benefit from the latest guidance and nutrition advice to live a healthy life.
There are also a number of “facts” that have recently been talked about in the press, and we wanted to clarify their accuracy.
We asked about the difference between Dietitians and Nutritionists as there are many people calling themselves nutritionists and it’s very confusing to understand who is giving the most accurate information.
The BDA website states that “To qualify as a Dietitian, you are required to undertake an approved programme at a university, which are all approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and may also apply for accreditation by The British Dietetic Association (BDA). Accreditation is a robust process providing assurance to the profession, students and the public that universities meet the standards of the professional body – the BDA. Registration to the HCPC is a legal requirement for anyone who wishes to practise using the title “Dietitian”. But anyone can call themselves a “Nutritionist” and they are not regulated, as Dietitians are.
The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) is a group of experts in nutrition, physical activity and cancer, who’ve analysed research around world and have come up with recommendations, all supported by research.
WCRF have 10 easy messages to help with cancer survivorship which we can read about on the WCRF website
Sarah had prepared some notes for us and gave us some information sheets to take away. We covered areas such as portion sizes, taking supplements, physical exercise, bone health, heart health and the menopause,
She also took away some questions from the group to do some research for us and will let us have answers as soon as possible
We would like to thank Sarah for her time and for the wealth of information she was able to give us,
If you’d like to arrange an appointment with Sarah at Hampshire Hospitals (HHFT), please ask your Cancer Nurse, GP or Oncologist to refer you.
